WHAT IS SUN SPEC?
SUNSPEC represents Sun Singapore
Polytechnic Engineering Cluster. We are a team from SP, who works on the solar
car project, consisting of the both the combination of mechanical and
electrical team.
For this coming July, we are going
to participate in the Shell Eco Marathon (SEM)
held in Sepang, Malaysia. Following the SEM, we are going to participate in the
World Solar Challenge (WSC) held
next year.
WHAT IS SEM ABOUT?
The Eco-Marathon is an annual competition sponsored
by Shell, in which
participants build special vehicles to achieve the highest possible fuel efficiency.
The Eco-Marathon is held around the world with events in Finland, France,
Germany, The Netherlands, Japan, and the USA. The Eco-Marathon has different categories
of competition: Fuel cell-powered, solar cell-powered, gasoline-fueled, diesel-fueled, and LPG-fueled. For SP, we are participating in
the solar call category.
The competition is further
divided into two classes: Prototype
and UrbanConcept classes. The
Prototype class is design for amateurs and their focus will be on maximum
efficiency, whereas, for UrbanConcept class the focus is shifted to more
practical design. As this is the first time SP is participating in the
competition, we will be in the Prototype class.
Taking place over
several days, teams make as many attempts as possible to travel the furthest on
the equivalent of one litre of fuel. Cars drive at a fixed speed around the
track for several laps. Organisers calculate their energy efficiency and name a
winner in each class base on the minimum energy used for each source. For this
year, the Shell Eco-marathon Asia will take place on the Sepang International Circuit, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SEM AWARDS?
For each category, awards
are given for the 1st and 2nd place. Side track awards
are also given for the design, safety, team work and technical innovation.
